Llandaff to pilot Welsh course for families

by Joni Ayn Alexander on August 13, 2010

A new Welsh course for families with children learning the language is the first of its kind — and is set to start here in Llandaff this autumn.

Parents, grandparents, babysitters — basically anyone in close contact with young children learning Welsh — are the targets for this new, national course. Because of the interest shown at Llandaff’s Ysgol Pencae, the area is set to be the only place in Cardiff to host the curriculum.

“If the parents want to learn Welsh, [the course] is the best possible way to help the children,” Geoff Wright says.

Geoff, a Danescourt resident and senior community and parents tutor at the Cardiff and Vale Welsh Language Teaching Centre, has taught Welsh classes around the area for the past nine years. Welsh for the Family is the newest course to his teaching portfolio.

According to Geoff, the course is unique because it’s tailored to people with children ages 3 to 7 learning the foundation phase of Welsh in school. This means lessons will teach families using more children-centric material, such as nursery rhymes and games.

Ysgol Pencae is the reason Llandaff has been chosen as the desired pilot area for this course. Geoff says the school’s well-established reputation and interest from parents is what led the centre to organise the class.

The course is a two year programme, with each year composed of 30 units. Students can expect to on their way to fluency in the language at the end of the two years.

Llandaff and Cowbridge are the only areas in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan where this new course is being organised for 2010. Details will not be finalised until early September.

‘Welsh for the Family’ course is set to begins 22 September, meeting every Wednesday for 30 weeks from 9:30 to 11:30 am at Ysgol Pencae. All families with children learning Welsh are welcome to sign up for the course. The course cost are not yet known and the times and date are subject to change.
