Llandaff takes a gulp out of final festive coffee morning

K2 Coffee House packed its High Street cafe for the final festive coffee morning in support of the High Street Decoration Fund. Local celebrity and BBC weatherman Derek Brockway — the man who helped light up Llandaff last Christmas — dropped in to sip a coffee and support the fundraiser.

Owners Kevin and Kim Geary counted 61 official tickets, though some people dropped extra pounds in the donation pot.

“Quite a lot of them are regulars,” Kim said of the crowd.

See who came to the final festive coffee morning:

Pegasus Court resident Jean Twyman proved Kim’s point, saying she pops in for the “nicest brown chips” once or twice a week.

Her neighbour and friend, Pat Patchell, who has attended the other coffee mornings, said of K2: “This is the nicest welcome.”

The golden tickets cost customer £4 each, with £1.50 going towards the High Street Decoration fund. The fund is what helps pay for the Llandaff Christmas Lights, which will be lit up this year by former Wales’ First Minister and Cardiff West AM Rhodri Morgan.

Llandaff Christmas Lights turn on in a festive High Street celebration on Wednesday 8 December. The road will close from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, with the Cathedral School Brass Band and the Oriana women’s choir serenading the High Street from 7 pm. Rhodri will flick the switch at 7:30 pm.

A thank you from John Isaacs and the Llandaff Society to the three High Street cafes who hosted the 2010 coffee mornings:

"We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation of the marvellous support for our fund raising coffee mornings held at Jasper's, Kalla Bella and K2. First of all to Babs, Janey, Kim and Kevin for their kindness in hosting these occasions and their hard work and enthusiastic cooperation in ensuring their success. But also to all of the customers to whom selling tickets was a pleasure. Over 200 tickets were sold in total and nearly £550 pounds raised as a result.

"We can look forward to an even better display this year on Weds. Dec. 8th when the Christmas lights will be officially switched on by Rhodri Morgan, formerly First Minister for Wales, at 7:30 p.m. The entertainment, which will be provided by the Cathedral School Brass Band and the Oriana Singers, starts at 7 p.m.

"PLEASE NOTE THAT THE HIGH STREET WILL BE CLOSED TO TRAFFIC ON THIS EVENING BETWEEN 6:60 AND 8:30 P.M.
"
John Isaacs, for and on behalf of the Llandaff Society"
